“Doomed Hemlock #9 in B&W” is offered as a custom fine art black and white photographic print, signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity. This image was captured before the Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA were decimated.
I captured this image in TMax 4×5 b&W sheet film with an Ebony view camera and Rodenstock Sironar S 180mm lens in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.
This image was captured one of my first visits to this true virgin old growth forest. These magical small remnants of the vast Eastern Old Growth Forests were a transformational experience and set me on my quest to search out and photograph true Eastern US Old Growth Forests for my “Tree Portraits” series.
This image of a majestic old Hemlock was a challenge. To capture this image, I had to lay on my back on the forest floor for perhaps an hour and a half with the tripod and upside down field camera above me. Everything was barely stable on only two tripod legs with the camera against the tree. The entire time there, on soft bed of the old growth, I was listening carefully and thinking about the very large and slightly perturbed Black Bear that had visited me on two previous occasions. The entire process was unnerving and challenging.
Focusing on the ground glass and making necessary tilt adjustments was only half the challenge in capturing this subject. Being careful to not move anything, I loaded each film holder into the camera, opened them by feel, peaked around the precarious set up above me and awaited calm. When the branches seemed to briefly remain still I captured this color image and then a black and white in the hopes that nothing moved during the 4 second long exposures. I felt quite lucky when looking for sharpness through my loupe on the light table after I developed this transparency and a B&W. This turned out to be a successful tree portrait session but very unrepeatable with 4×5 film. Sadly, this beautiful 5-700 year old tree has since succumbed to the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, but here is her black and white portrait.

Description
“Doomed Hemlock #9 in B&W” is offered as a limited edition, fine art black and white photographic print. I captured this subject in TMax 100 4×5 sheet film with an Ebony 4×5 view camera and Rodenstock Sironar S 180mm lens in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.
The image was captured before the Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA were decimated by the hemlock wooly adelgid. There is also a color version of this image available in the Color Intimate Landscapes collection. The drum scan of the 4×5 sheet film assures print sizes to 52 x 65 (and larger) are critically sharp at extremely close viewing distances. All images are as I saw them and imaged with only color, brightness, shadow and contrast & local light and shadow adjustments, just as I did in the darkroom.
This is a museum quality fine art print in black and white.
Included in Your Print Purchase:
- Pricing includes the print only, shipped flat to 16 x 20 or rolled in a tube mailer for larger sizes.
Framing, Presentation and Preservation:
- All prints will require a frame, glass and backing material that matches print size. (Frames usually come 1/8” oversized to accommodate the glass, print and backing, please verify.)
- Borderless Framing (meaning no cut matboard): All prints include a white border containing the number and signature.
- Again, the white borders of the print assure that a cut mat board is not required for framing an Archival Print.
- Acid Free white foamcore is a good choice for backing in .25” thickness. An Acid Free matboard is optional between the backer board and the print.
- Glass Options (“the Glazing”): Classic AR Glass, Museum Glass or other UV glass or a UV Acrylic as the “Glazing” (again meaning Glass) is highly recommended for UV protection and to protect the print. Classic AR Glass and Museum Glass are Anti-Reflective which greatly enhances viewing the print.
- No spray or coating is required or recommended on any of our prints, please refrain from any such treatment.
- Other Framing Options: We can help with the framing in several molding styles and glazing options or steer you in the right direction for the perfect framing materials that assure archival print endurance.
