“Doomed Hemlocks #17” is offered as a custom fine art color photographic print, signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity. This image was captured before the Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA were decimated.

I captured this image in 4×5 transparency sheet film with an Ebony view camera and 135mm Rodenstock Sironar S lens in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.

This image taken in early morning in the early fall has a painterly quality from the softened light of a lifting fog with the first hints of directional light coming from the east. The old growth forest was awash in saturated and subtle color and upon arriving at the natural area after a mile long hike with my heavy pack filled with everything need for a morning of large format film photography.

After setting up the camera and composing this first scene of the Hemlock forest through the thick Rhododendrons I was in a race against time as sunlight began to burn off the fog. Metering the light was a ever-changing challenge in the brightening forest and I was just able to capture this image and one in black and white before sunlight broke through and ended my photography that day. This early morning visit ended up being one of my last to one of my favorite spots on Earth. I did not know at the time that this magical remnant of true Virgin Old Growth Hemlock Forest was living on borrowed time.

“Doomed Hemlocks #17” is offered as a limited edition, fine art Color photographic print. I captured this subject in Kodak E100SW 4×5 transparency film with an Ebony 4×5 view camera and 135mm Rodenstock Sironar S lens in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.

This color image was captured before the Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA were decimated by the hemlock wooly adelgid. The drum scan of the 4×5 transparency assures print sizes to 44 x 55 (and larger) are critically sharp at extremely close viewing distances. All images are as I saw them and imaged with only color, brightness, shadow and contrast & local light and shadow adjustments, just as I did in the darkroom. 

This is a museum quality fine art print in Color.

    • Framing, Presentation and Preservation:

  • All prints will require a frame, glass and backing material that matches print size. (Frames usually come 1/8” oversized to accommodate the glass, print and backing, please verify.)
  • Borderless Framing (meaning no cut matboard): All prints include a white border containing the number and signature.
  • Again, the white borders of the print assure that a cut mat board is not required for framing an Archival Print.
  • Acid Free white foamcore is a good choice for backing in .25” thickness. An Acid Free matboard is optional between the backer board and the print.
  • Glass Options (“the Glazing”): Classic AR Glass, Museum Glass or other UV glass or a UV Acrylic as the “Glazing” (again meaning Glass) is highly recommended for UV protection and to protect the print. Classic AR Glass and Museum Glass are Anti-Reflective which greatly enhances viewing the print.
  • No spray or coating is required or recommended on any of our prints, please refrain from any such treatment.
