Price range: $160.00 through $875.00

All images and content copyright Archival Prints LLC and Skip Gleichman.
“Doomed Hemlock #12” is offered as a custom fine art color photographic print, signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity. This image was captured before the Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA were decimated.

I captured this image in 4×5 transparency sheet film with an Ebony view camera and 90mm Rodenstock Grandagon lens in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.

This image was captured on a latter visit to this true virgin old growth forest. These magical small remnants of the vast Eastern Old Growth Forests were a transformational experience and set me on my quest to search out and photograph true Eastern US Old Growth Forests for my “Tree Portraits” series. This beautiful old Hemlock tree is the same one captured in my “Doomed Hemlock #9” image. This tree portrait was taken in nearly the same position however, but both the photographer and his beautiful subject were a year older during this “session”.

This image of a majestic old Hemlock was not quite the challenge as was the “Doomed Hemlock #12” image. This image was captured with a wide angle lens without me having to lay face up on the forest floor to capture her portrait. I was hoping for soft lighting on this trip to be able to capture a bit more of her wide canopy and the 90mm lens allowed for a different perspective. This majestic Hemlock was one one the oldest in the Natural Area and she drew my eye with every visit. She was likely in the 700 year old range and was as healthy as you could imagine then.

It is sad to know that she was one of the grand Eastern Hemlocks that were slaughtered by the merciless invasive species, the Wooly Adelgid. Though I had no idea as to her impending fate at that time, I am glad to have been able to pay homage to this beautiful tree in all of her glory.

This limited Edition Print will be Signed and Numbered. Pricing includes the print only with a white border and includes free shipping unless otherwise noted. This Print Requires Framing (see detailed info below).

Description

“Doomed Hemlock #12” is offered as a limited edition, fine art Color photographic print. I captured this subject in Kodak E100SW 4×5 transparency film with an Ebony 4×5 view camera and 90mm Rodenstock Grandagon lens in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.

This color image was captured before the Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA were decimated by the hemlock wooly adelgid. There is also a Black and White version of this image available in the Black and White Intimate Landscapes collection. The drum scan of the 4×5 transparency assures print sizes to 44 x 55 (and larger) are critically sharp at extremely close viewing distances. All images are as I saw them and imaged with only color, brightness, shadow and contrast & local light and shadow adjustments, just as I did in the darkroom.

This is a museum quality fine art print in Color.  Included in Your Print Purchase:

  • Again, the white borders of the print assure that a cut mat board is not required for framing an Archival Print.

  • Glass Options (“the Glazing”): Classic AR Glass, Museum Glass or other UV glass or a UV Acrylic as the “Glazing” (again meaning Glass) is highly recommended for UV protection and to protect the print. Classic AR Glass and Museum Glass are Anti-Reflective which greatly enhances viewing the print.
  • No spray or coating is required or recommended on any of our prints, please refrain from any such treatment.
