I captured this image in 4×5 transparency sheet film with an Ebony view camera and Rodenstock Sironar S 135mm lens in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This image was captured in both color and B&W on a deeply overcast day in early June. This area of the western UP has been a favorite destination as it has offered flowing water and old growth tree portrait images when the lighting has cooperated.

I discovered the Cisco Branch well before GPS units were carried around in our pockets by using an actual official paper topo map that had to be “ordered” along with many others. Yes, the film days were difficult. Since, I have enjoyed this secluded area for the fast flowing tannin tinged, yet “clear”, water flowing through rocky outcroppings. The various cascades and falls have made for several intimate landscapes featured here.

Cisco Branch #8 was memorable in that setting up, moving the tripod, focusing, metering the light and finally capturing this scene with long exposures took perhaps an hour. During the entire time, I was being intently watched by a curious Black Bear who never tried to approach me or decided to flee. After shooting two sheets each of color transparency and black and white film and packing everything up into my backpack, my curious visitor apparently decided she had seen enough and meandered off.

“Cisco Branch #8” is offered as a limited edition, fine art Color photographic print. I captured this subject in Fuji RVP 4×5 transparency film with an Ebony 4×5 view camera and Rodenstock Sironar S 135mm lens near the Black River in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The drum scan of the 4×5 transparency assures print sizes to 40 x 50 are critically sharp at extremely close viewing distances. All images are as I saw them and imaged with only color, brightness, shadow and contrast & local light and shadow adjustments, just as I did in the darkroom. 

This is a museum quality fine art print in Color. There is also a pure Black and White version of this image captured with TMax 100 available in the Black and White Intimate Landscapes collection.

    Included in Your Print Purchase:

  • Pricing includes the print only, shipped flat to 16 x 20 or rolled in a tube mailer for larger sizes.

    • Framing, Presentation and Preservation:

  • All prints will require a frame, glass and backing material that matches print size. (Frames usually come 1/8” oversized to accommodate the glass, print and backing, please verify.)
  • Borderless Framing (meaning no cut matboard): All prints include a white border containing the number and signature.
  • Again, the white borders of the print assure that a cut mat board is not required for framing an Archival Print.
  • Acid Free white foamcore is a good choice for backing in .25” thickness. An Acid Free matboard is optional between the backer board and the print.
  • Glass Options (“the Glazing”): Classic AR Glass, Museum Glass or other UV glass or a UV Acrylic as the “Glazing” (again meaning Glass) is highly recommended for UV protection and to protect the print. Classic AR Glass and Museum Glass are Anti-Reflective which greatly enhances viewing the print.
  • No spray or coating is required or recommended on any of our prints, please refrain from any such treatment.
