"Doomed Hemlock #24" is offered as a custom fine art color photographic print, signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity. This "tree portrait" was captured in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.

I captured this subject with a Fuji digital medium format camera and Contax 120mm Makro Planar lens.

This image, captured during a late fall afternoon, it of a very large and very old Hemlock tree that has stood in the shaded Rhododendrons for multiple centuries, adjacent to the clear flowing "Detweiler Run" brook. This Hemlock is among the largest in the natural area with a trunk measuring perhaps four feet at eye level. The thickly textured aged bark adorned with lichens and moss provided a wonderful portrait of this beautiful tree.

From the trail, it took perhaps 25 minutes to carefully navigate, nearly crawling at times, with my tripod and camera the thirty feet to the base of this magnificent tree through the dense Rhododendron understory. After setting up the camera and composing this scene, I took a series of detailed images that compose this print file in the fading afternoon light. I had noticed this massive tree from the trail many times in the "film days", but had never been able to get anywhere close to her with the massive amount of equipment required for large format film photography. This tree portrait was the last image taken that day.

This centuries old Hemlock is a magical remnant of true Virgin Old Growth Hemlock Forest, and is living on borrowed time with its future quite uncertain.

This limited Edition Print will be Signed and Numbered. Pricing includes the print only with a white border and includes free shipping unless otherwise noted. This Print Requires Framing (see detailed info below).

Description

“Doomed Hemlock #24” is offered as a limited edition, fine art Color photographic print. I captured this subject with a Fuji digital medium format camera and Contax 120mm Makro Planar lens in the Detweiler Run Natural Area of Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.

This color image of a centuries old majestic Hemlock standing among massive Rhododendrons was captured in the fall of 2025. These Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA are currently being attacked by the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid and their survival is uncertain. This massive print is critically sharp at extremely close viewing distances due to my carefully capturing and stitching 12 images into an extremely detailed print file. This image is as I saw the scene with only my "Velvia Film, Color Profile" applied to mimic transparency film along with brightness, shadow and contrast adjustments just as I did in the darkroom when wet printing.

This is a museum quality fine art print in Color.
