Moth on an Ancient Hemlock – Fine Art Color Print from 4×5 Film

“Moth on an Ancient Hemlock” is offered as a custom fine art color photographic print, signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity. This image was captured before the Ancient Old Growth Eastern Hemlocks in Central PA were decimated.

I captured this subject in Kodak E100SW transparency film with an Ebony 4×5 camera and 150mm Rodenstock Sironar S lens in Alan Seeger Natural Area, Rothrock State Forest, Pennsylvania.

This image was captured just after dawn prior to a brief thunderstorm. The early light drew me to the saturated color on the north facing side of this old Hemlock tree. To capture this tree portrait, I found the view I wanted, selected the lens for the camera, selected the lens for the view camera and focused on the ground glass carefully using my loupe. In order to keep the entire image in focus, I had to stop down the lens to f32 which made for an eight second exposure in the dim early light. I exposed the film during a period of calm since even a gentle breeze can sway a tree enough to ruin a longer exposure as even the lower trunks of tall trees can “sway”. It was not until examining the developed 4×5 transparency with that same loupe that I discovered the well camouflaged Moth in the lower right area of the image. Hence “Moth on an Ancient Hemlock” was the obvious name for this tree portrait.
